Rayner software

Rayner Software produces Mac and iPhone consumer applications

Two Mac versions:
NetShade & NetShade AS

If you’re on OS X 10.11 El Capitan and you don’t need Proxy services, you should probably download NetShade AS from the App Store.

If you’re on an older OS X and/or you need Proxy services in addition to VPN, you’ll need the standard version of NetShade.

Will my NetShade account work in both versions?

Yes, as long as your account has VPN access. Registration codes are interchangeable between NetShade and NetShade AS.

Why have two versions?

App Store applications have access to a limited set of features. To make proxy and VPN connections, NetShade has traditionally needed to obtain administrator privileges on your computer. App Store applications are not allowed to escalate their privileges, so up until now it has not been possible to bring NetShade to the Mac App Store.

In OS X El Capitan, Apple introduced a new App Store-approved way of initiating VPN connections. There is still no way to make a proxy connection work in the App Store. This is why the App Store version of NetShade is VPN only, and requires OS X 10.11.

Do I need proxy service?

Probably not. VPN does everything that proxy does, but adds encryption and improved connection robustness. Proxy-only subscriptions are available at a lower cost than Proxy+VPN subscriptions, but can only be used in the standard version of NetShade.

What’s different about VPN in the App Store version?

NetShade AS uses an IKEv2 VPN infrastructure, built with Apple’s new NetworkExtension framework. This replaces the OpenVPN backend in the standard version of NetShade. With this approach, NetShade no longer needs to install custom software in order to make VPN connections. Instead, it uses the software that’s now built into OS X. This makes for a cleaner app with no external dependencies.

Can I run both versions?

Yes, you can have both applications installed. Running both apps at the same time is not advised, but they can be used interchangeably.

Will both versions be updated in the future?

Yes, we plan on maintaining both versions of NetShade concurrently.
